The phantom of the opera mise en scene analysis and sound

costume
When the female character is introduced at the beginning she is wearing an old styled dress with a corset which could suggest that this scene was set at a particular time period possibly in the  80's.  the male is wearing a colour black cape. the colour black connotes evilness and creates a sense of mystery, making him the villain.  the cape could also give an impression of a mythical creature which makes the audience have a picture of a mysterious evil character.
lighting
Low key lighting is used in the scene the dark and depressing atmosphere creates mystery and get the audience thinking and waiting intensely of what might happen next, this is reflected by the female character, the light source from the fire fire torch held by the male. him  holding the torch could suggest he is the dominant character making him the central character of the film. The light is focused on him which draws the audiences attention again showing he is the central character.  the scene starts of in black and white towards the end of the scene it changes in colour and into a more lively place suggesting the change in time period.

Acting
The man ( central character)  is standing in front of the female which signifies he is the dominant one in control. He is also looking ahead, at an unknown object which creates mystery for the audience, as they would want to know what has caught his attention. He is standing sideways, which signifies he is not a welcoming person, creating even more mystery  e.g. why is he like that?. The masked character has a serious facial expression, which also make him look unwelcoming.

The female’s expression shows she is focused on the main character , like the audience. This could signify her excitement of his presence or she may be in a “unreal” state which also makes him appear as a magical character.

Props
The main character is also holding a fire torch. A fire torch could connote power and dominant males, but could also connote passions which suggest he is powerful and may have passion or love for the female he is guiding along.
Setting
The scene is set in a dark castle which could represents the time period. It is dark with only torch light, the surroundings are bare and dusty which could signify that it is an isolated place.

Sound used in Phantom of the opera
the music uses diegetic sound, the music starts of quiet and gets louder whilst the scene plays along which creates a sense of mystery quite repetitive maybe giving us a hint to what might happen. sound bridge is uses in the next scene you can hear the surrounding (ambient sound) before you see it on screen gives it a good effect. the man speaking in the background, this signifies that the place maybe an isolated place. the music sounds very dark which  is contrapuntal which creates mystery. towards the end the music changes completely it gets more pacy and louder this could be showing the change in time as the scene changes colour from being black and white to being in colour.
